Combating Spiritual Addiction

Happy New Year!!! I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday season and brought in the new year with joy. 2015 will be a fresh, new start and will definitely be less hectic than last year. Let's expect the best!

Today I'd like to talk about Spiritual Addiction. I think it's important for people to understand that everything has the potential to be addicting...spirituality included. It's easy to get so caught up in our spiritual selves; almost to the point of complete and total isolation. If this is the choice you've made, then that is alright. It becomes an issue, however, when you unknowingly fall into a world that leads to a neglect of logic and the physical body. In this world we live in, it's important to maintain a level of balance. You are as much of a physical being as you are a spiritual being. You are not one more than the other. After all, we are here on earth to have human experiences as well as spiritual experiences, and we are here to learn from all of them.

So how do you know if you have a spiritual addiction? Here are just a few ways you can tell:

-All you want to do is meditate all day
-You neglect your physical needs
-You have ideas and plans that never manifest
-Spirituality is associated with EVERYTHING
-You've isolated yourself from the outside world

Of course there are more ways to tell if you have an addiction to spirituality but this is just to touch the surface.

Meditating all day will not save you from the world. While it does offer some relaxation and a chance for self discovery, it is not necessary to meditate all day, everyday. It should be done in moderation like everything else. Some people get attached to the slight ungrounded feeling that occurs after meditating. Again, this high will not save you from the world and the people that live in it. Use it more as a means of self care and a time to unwind, rather than a way to escape your problems.

One thing I notice that happens frequently is those on a spiritual journey forget their physical needs. They begin to feel that eating, having clothes and taking care of themselves is egotistical and has little importance. There is nothing "wrong" with taking care of your physical shell. If you do want to go shopping for clothes, then please go. Being spiritual does not necessarily mean physical neglect. If your body craves chicken, then have some! Do not restrict yourself because of fear of being judged or fear that you're not "spiritual". Spirituality is a subjective experience.

An aspect of spirituality that people love is that it helps to awaken your creative self. You shed light on many different parts of your consciousness that helps bear wonderful creative fruit. If you are not manifesting these ideas, however, how much weight do they really hold? If you do have an idea, take action on it. Your inspiration without your action will be nothing more than fluff in the ethers.

"I wonder if Matt Damon has an imbalanced sacral chakra", " The spokes on this bicycle wheel look a lot like a mandala." Perhaps the nature of these comments sound familiar to you. Spirituality is a way of life for many people. Remember though, that while everything has a spiritual aspect, it is still present as a physical object. A bike is still a bike, a television is still a television, and a human is indeed still a human. There is no shame in seeing objects, humans and animals as being physical. Sometimes it helps us maintain our equilibrium when we are able to see things as they are and the different aspects they possess.

While it is vital for many people to spend time alone, doing so as a means of escape can lead to imbalance. Being excessively introverted can isolate you from the outside world which in turn can keep you from experiencing the beauty that is contained within it. The world is there for us to explore so why not take advantage of this opportunity? The same applies to friends and family. Be with them, enjoy their company. Balance time alone and time with loved ones. Don't forget that our time here is limited.

So, what is the key to combating spiritual addiction? Balance!! Yes, you are a spiritual being but you are also a human being! Engaging in physical activities does not diminish your spiritual essence. Enjoy the world and enjoy this human experience.

  1. Those who see worldly life as an obstacle to spirituality see no spirituality in everyday actions; they have not yet discovered that there are no everyday actions outside of spirituality. [Dogen]
great post...balance is extremely important...but also integration...to integrate spirituality with your everyday life is to recognize that even in the most seemingly mundane of activities...therein lies the spark of the divine...
